CAS stands for Creativity, Activity and Service. It is an important part of the non-academic life of the school and we value contributions in each of these three areas highly. During Horizons Week, lessons are suspended for five days and students have the opportunity to take part in a broad range of experiences that are not normally available through the usual timetable. Horizons Week is a compulsory part of our broader curriculum and attendance is therefore mandatory.
The online Horizons Week website contains all of the experiences that are on offer to those students who will be in Years 8, 9,10,11, 12 and 13 during the week in November 2019 (Current Years 7, 8 ,9,10, 11 and 12). There are a wide range of opportunities available; every attempt to participate in each of the areas of creativity, activity and service during the students' time at West Island School is expected.
Options and costs should be discussed as a family, then students will need to register their three equal choices online via WISDOM at during the HW sign up period (Friday 15 March - Thursday 21 March). This must be completed by Thursday 21 March (6pm) at the very latest. Some courses will be oversubscribed and others, may be withdrawn if not enough students sign up. For this reason, students are asked to give three choices and must be prepared to accept any one of them as their HW2019 experience. Please note that it is not possible to change selections once choices have been made.
Students will be allocated to experiences before Easter break.
Those who are assigned an overseas activity MUST provide a photocopy of the student's passport and HKID card, in addition to this, parents must, for overseas experiences complete a letter of consent. All experiences require a non-refundable deposit by 10 May 2019 at the very latest. Failure to return a deposit by this date may mean loss of place as we move to secure service provider contracts, flights and accommodation.
Students' passports must have at least 6 months validity, with an expiry date no earlier than May 2020. Any passports with less than 6 months validity will need to be renewed in a timely manner. It is the responsibility of parents to provide all necessary visas for their children to travel. Copies of visas will also need to be sent into school where required. It is also the parent’s responsibility to check what vaccinations are needed and make sure that the vaccinations are given with enough time to take effect.
It is also the parents' responsibility to ensure that the medical information provided on Gateway is up to date. Any changes to conditions must be registered. We rely on accurate information to support our students effectively.
Please note that all costs, especially for overseas trips, are provisional at this stage and may go up or down, depending on the number of students who finally sign up for the activity. The actual number of students determines the number of discounted seats available on flights, and over the next ten months there are also likely to be changes in fuel surcharges and currency fluctuations which are out of our control.
For further information, please contact the member of staff who is leading the activity.
Out of the varied experiences listed in on the website, we hope there is something to challenge and engage everyone during HW2019.
Full details of the experiences available are shown on this website. Registration will begin at 6pm, Friday 15 March. The closing date for registration is Thursday 21 March. Details of how to register online are under the SIGN UP tab.
Please read the Horizons Week Policy 2019 for further clarification.
A reminder that if you are in receipt of any financial support from the school, you would have received a separate email from the school and please refer to that before selections are made.
